19th-Century sterling silver 13 inch ladle with up-tipt "fiddle" handle and oval bowl. Engraved "Baker" on the handle. On the back of the handle, hallmarked with “HH&B” in a diamond and pseudohallmarks, stamped “STERLING 925”, and stamped “T. E. THOMPSON”.Context
This ladle is attributed to James Addison Baker Sr, the district judge to the Harris County District Court, Harris County’s only court at the time, and Thomas Thompson, a silver retailer in Houston. Baker and Thompson were both active in Houston, with a population of ten to fifteen thousand people, in 1867. The ladle was made by S.D. Bower & Son of Albany, New York circa 1867, with the sterling silver standard was officially adopted in 1868. Provenance: The Estate of Stella R. Sharp of Natchez, Mississippi.Category
