Victoria Marsh [Cabinet Card]Description
Cabinet card of two small wooden boats in an unidentified marsh. Imprint on front: "Petrini, SUPERIOR FINISH. Victoria, Texas." Handwritten on back, "This marsh is cut up by hundreds of bayous deep enough to carry any ship that floats."Context
By 1860, there were 1,986 residents in Victoria and the town had become a major junction between Lavaca Bay ports, San Antonio, Austin, and northern Mexico. This cabinet card is of one of the many marshes providing transportation to the Gulf of Mexico. By 1900, the old Lavaca Bay settlements to the southeast had declined and such river towns as Kemper's Bluff to the south and Clinton to the north had vanished.Category
