Description

1882 tippless stopper lamp. Designed by Ludwig Böem while at The American Electric Light Co. Boem previously worked for Heinrich Geissler and, Hiram Maxim/The US Electric Lighting Co. and most notably for Thomas Edison. Böem later claimed that his was the first stopper lamp produced. Other than a stopper type lamp patented by Edison for experimental use, the Böem lamp is the earliest stopper lamp found in period reference material to date. These lamps were likely never put into any form of substantial use, all period imagery nor known extant examples show no practical means of securing the lamp and connecting it current. This example bears a label recording the lamps identification and signed "WHJ" (William Joseph Hammer) in the lower left corner.
