Description

This Brit Milah chair was carved out of oak in an Elizabethan style in 1660. This date is important because Jews were first allowed back to England legally in 1655 and the first synagogue was formed in 1657, so this chair represents the beginning of Jews returning to England and reestablishing a community after expulsion in the 13th century. The Star of David carving is original and the words "Brit Shalom" were added in the 18th century.
