Description

Cases for phylacteries for the hand and head. One cube is labeled Shel Yad ("for the hand"); the other is labeled She-Rosh ("for the head"). These velvet-lined silver cubes are for holding the parchment sheets inscribed with the verses Exodus 13:1-10 and 11-16 and Deuteronomy 6: 4-9, 11, and 13-21. Each cube's sides are engraved with a lion, a deer, an eagle, and a leopard, referencing verse 23 of "Ethics of our Fathers," "Be strong as a leopard, light as an eagle, fleet as a deer and strong as a lion, to do the will of thy Father who is in Heaven."
