Description

Balaam and Anthon in a pastel drawing by Albert Pann (1883-1963), who is considered one of the greatest Jewish painters of the 20th century. Pann was born in Poland to a father who was a rabbi and head of a yeshiva, and studied painting in Odessa. His first paintings expressed with vivid impressions the suffering of the Jewish peiople throughout the ages. In 1921 he returned to Jerusalem and painted the series of Bible paintings expressing the European oriental concept, with the presentation of the iblical figures as the inhabitants of the East at that time.
