Description

Artist statement: Front: Moses holding the cup of Elijah toward the evening sky to represent the beginning of Passover. The cup holds ten drops of wine representing the ten plagues God wrought upon the Egyptians. Beneath Moses his followers are liberated from Egypt. In the center of the plate surrounding the word 'Liberation' are the four promises made to God to the Israelites: I will bring you out, I will rid you, I will redeem you, I will take you. Beneath the Israelites in an arched frame is a drawing representing Jerusalem: the four children (the wise, the wicked, the simple, and the one who does not know how to ask) and four wine goblets representing the four promises. In the center is a lighted candle to signal the start of Passover. The border of the Seder Plate is divided into six sections in the shape of the Star of David. Each section contains one of the ceremonial foods.... Other design elements used are taken from the seven species: wheat, barley, pomegranate, dates, olives, grapes and figs. The back of the plate is divided into twelve sections. Each depicts one of the twelve ancient tribes of the Israelites with the appropriate symbol used by that tribe.
