Description

Cloisonne enamel on silver. Stones represent the 12 tribes. Teardrops represent Hannah and seven sons' martyrdom. Dove of peace=triumph of maccabees. Wings: an Angel appeared on the sixth day of battle to encourage the weary warriors. Seven leafed branch and seven gold squares=days of the secular week. Eight stones: continuity of the number of days celebrating Chanukah, stones live forever as will the observance of this holiday. Temple glowing in its purified, revitalized rebirth after the revolt. The composition is enclosed in a Tallit, for although Hanukkah is not a Biblical holiday, I [artist] think of it as being separate from the mundane, as the Tallit separates the spiritual from the secular.
