Description

Used by Chevrat Shive'ah Keruim Translation notes from Rabbi Brazner 3/14/24: “In the year tav-pey-gimmel (ie 5483) lifrat katan lamed-pey-koof (meaning ‘of the small specification’, ie the last 3 digits of the Hebrew year), from the Manoah synagogue of the famous Rabbi Isaac Rabbi Yakels (not sure here, it’s a name spelled yud-ayin-koof-lamed-sin/shin) ‘’Zatsal’ (ie an acronym added after someone’s name once they’ve died meaning ‘may their memory of a sainted person be for a blessing’; like zichronam l’vracha) Notes from file: Inscription: the names of the members of the Chevrat Shive'ah Keruim and "this belongs to the synagogue of the known deceased Rabbi Isaac Reb Jekeles, of blessed memory, dated 1723." The society was founded in Cracow in 1722 for the purpose of reading the Torah and praying Musaf in less-crowded surroundings. Until then, the formation of any minyan, other than in the established synagogues, was forbidden. Forced by financial difficulties, the community granted authorization of the new society and later even broader concessions in exchange for donations and loans to communal welfare funds. The society was headed by Natan Feitel, a relative of Reb Eisek Jekeles (Rabbi Isaac Reb Jekeles) to whom the present beaker was dedicated. Jekeles was a widespread family of businessmen known from the end of the 16th century in Cracow and is named for its founder Jacob (Jekele) Bogaty. His son Isaac ben Jacob (Jakubovich), known as Reb Eisik Reb Jekeles was one of the most prominent Jewish bankers and merchants in Poland and was an important figure in the Jewish community. Between 1628 and 1644, he erected a magnificent synagogue in Renaissance style, which is still known as the "Reb Eisik Reb Jekeles Shul." Enc. Judaica volume 9 (1333-1334) and volume 15 (606)
