Description

By style, Michael Erenthal identified it as carved by Moldovan (Romanian) craftsman. He thought it was made in America after the craftsman immigrated. He, therefore, dated its early 20th century. In cataloging the collection, I came across a letter from Bill Gross in 1998, 16 years earlier: It was for an exact matching piece from a synagogue in Romania except the center has a brass sheet with candle holders. Most likely from the same synagogue with each piece on opposite sides of the ark. If so, this would date the piece 19th century Romania. Hebrew: "Donated by Eliezer son of Saul in memory of his father" and "Keep God in front of you forever." The file includes letter/receipt from Moriah Galleries.
