Laclede-Christy locomotive "Old No. 2"
TNMOTTranscription
Old Number Two, a 1907 steam locomotive, will join its contemporaries at the Museum of Transport, Inc., in Kirkwood next Wednesday. It has been retired by the Laclede-Christy Co., which used it to haul clay for many years.
Thought to be the only locomotive of its kind in St. Louis, the small engine has been standing idle on a deserted track, where neighborhood children have used it for many an imaginary trip. In the course of time, its bell has been stolen, its joints are rusty and all of the engineer's windows are broken, Dr. John P. Roberts, president of the museum said.
The museum staff is refurbishing the locomotive, with parts collected in the last few years, Dr. Roberts said. The museum houses relics of transportation including some locomotives and busses dating back to 1870. It is in Barretts Station road.
The engine has been on a track at the Hampton avenue plant of Laclede-Christy. Previously it had been in use at the company's Kingshighway plant, where it was a familiar sight hauling clay across Kingshighway 20 years ago. It is a 30- inch gauge engine and in its day was capable of hauling 21 tons on a five-degree incline, Dr. Roberts said.Created By
