Transcription
This 1868 [1873 - ed] Hayes modification of the Ross Winans Camel-Back, one of the acquisitions from Purdue University, is the Museum of Transport's oldest engine. The 50-ton locomotive, one of the early coal burners, gets its name from engineer's cab atop the boiler. Fireman's station was under canopy of tender at left. Museum now has nine old locomotives, 12 streetcars, four busses, 25 automobiles and trucks, two horse-drawn streetcars, eight large pieces of assorted railroad equipment, a 6000-volume library on transportation. On the grounds is first railroad tunnel bored west of the Mississippi. It was first used in 1853, abandoned in 1944.Language
