Gertrude Stein, Edna St Vincent Millay, Virginia Woolf, H.D., Josephine Baker, Louise Brooks, Coco Chanel, the Suffragettes, the Prohibitionists, the Flappers. The 1920s was decidedly a decade of extraordinary women. They were thinkers, artists, singers, activists, rebels, and revolutionaries. They challenged the expectations of their gender, and experimented with an independence heretofore unseen in Western history. This piece is dedicated to the women of the 1920s, and titled after the poem "First Fig" by Edna St Vincent Millay, first published in 1920: My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends-- It gives a lovely light!
