Despite the Prohibition Era of the Roaring Twenties, “Gin Joints” and “Speakeasies “and dance music venues were part of the social revolution that popularized jazz music during this decade. Baton Rouge holds a special place in jazz history as one of the ports of call for the river excursions of the Streckfus Steamer known as the Capitol. It was here that one of the most celebrated jazz trumpeters of all time, Louis Armstrong, made his professional debut with Fate Marabel’s band, the Palmetto Jazzerites. I selected the Baton Rouge block because it not only suited my art-deco inspired design vision, but also contributed to the historical significance of my entry. Hot Jazz in Baton Rouge is intended to evoke the feel of a night out enjoying hot jazz, cold drinks and the unstoppable energy of rapidly evolving social norms.
