"Aletsch is part of a series of quilts that represent my efforts to synthesize sensory responses to a particular space: the vast mountainous basin in the Swiss Alps that encloses the Aletsch Glacier, the largest in Europe. In the summer of 1988 I spent several days hiking along its perimeter, which extends many kilometers down from the Jungfrau firn. What impressed me most was the very audible sound of millions of gallons of water rushing unseen beneath the perfectly still expanse of glacier. It seemed incongruous: the unrelenting movement of so much water and the stone rigidity of so much ice. Combined with the brilliance of the light and the clarity of the air, that incongruity made for a very memorable scenario."Label Type

"My work develops in series. I have approached this working structure in different ways at different times. Sometimes I've worked through an entire series of related quilts in an unbroken sequence, altering and refining the imagistic elements until I felt that I resolved all of the problems that presented themselves, or had exhausted the possibilities. At other times, I've worked two or more series in tandem, moving back and forth from one to another, borrowing from series to series, interweaving the visual concerns with which I was preoccupied at the time."Label Type

"An important goal in my work has been, and continues to be, the creation of visual surfaces in which the viewer can encounter unexpected color/space alliances and complex movements that will appear to have changed after multiple viewings. I want the viewer to discover new elements each time the object is seen and to feel that familiarity with the work intensifies rather than diminishes each successive encounter."
