In 2007, Dorris McManis challenged herself to create a 12" x 12" quilt each week for a year. She did this "just for myself, to be creative and to do something I would not normally do with fabric." She wrote that these small quilts "reflect the influences of places I have visited, books I have read, and quilters that inspired me." "In every artist's life there is a moment of quickening where a medium, a teacher, a technique, or a burning question takes hold." This happened to Dorris when she saw the Quilt National innovative quilt exhibit in 1991 in St. Louis. "Quilting became a lifelong passion, course of meticulous study, and outlet for an ever-deepening creative force." Dorris collected fabric during her world travels with her husband Chuck, and worked at Jackman's Fabrics. She saw every Quilt National exhibit she could. An active member of the Circle in the Square guild, she participated in a small challenge group that focused on innovative quilts. Dorris passed away in 2010.
