"This is one in a series of quilts I have made about birds as symbols of freedom and about the joy to be found in life. The abstracted birds are intentionally ambiguous so that the viewers must use their own life experience to guess the birds’ species. Even the number of birds in the design is subject to interpretation. I have had this idea for many years. Using my computer, I re-sized and re-positioned bird shapes to create this very complex pieced design. I hand-dyed fabrics to create colors that represent the spectral colors of refracted light. Darker values of red and purple gradate through orange and yellow in the center to blue and green at the top. Over 100 different colors of Madeira Poly-Neon® thread were used to stitch the machine quilting."
