“Taking my cue from the layered structure of the quilt that has become my chosen medium of artistic expression, much of my work has to do with layers, both literal and figurative. Layers of color, light, and pattern. Layers of meaning. Layers of materials. Layers that occur in nature and those created by the hand of man and then added to and altered by the passage of time, the layer working in the fourth dimension. My most successful works combine a vivid image when viewed from several feet away with extra rewards for the viewer who takes the time to move in and examine them more closely.
The inspiration for this quilt came from the traditional Pine Burr block. I made it for the 2004 Hoffman Challenge and was awarded second prize in the pieced division. It is machine paper-foundation pieced and machine quilted.”Label
Scott Murkin is a doctor and hospice physician in Asheboro. He's also a quilter. Scott grew up in Illinois watching his grandmother and other relatives make quilts, helping to cut out patterns. As an adult, he says, "I was sad that my children wouldn't have one of my grandmother's quilts" So he made one from his daughter, and one for his son, and some more for his relatives and friends. Then he began making quilts for display and in 1997, joined the Randolph Quilter's Guild. Displays led to exhibitions, and fairs led to competitions. Soon, Scott became a sought-after judge for quilting shows. His quilts have been exhibited around the world and appeared in numerous publications.
