Butternut refers to the color of the quilt's fabric, as well as the town Diane's father lived in when he was younger and became legend in his stories. It is in her father's memory that Diane made this quilt. The quilt has quilted motifs throughout the center area that disregard seam lines and swirl around the nine feathered star blocks. Many of the motifs are representational including flowers, leaves, and animals, and are reminders of her father and his interests. Diane used quilting designs she collected over the years by various artists as well as her own.
