Gerald Roy’s professional career in the arts began in graduate school in 1966. Since then he has worked as a professional painter and designer, and as an art educator. In 1971, Roy became involved with quilts through Pilgrim/Roy Antiques and Interiors.
Time and space constraints caused Roy to turn to quiltmaking as a medium of artistic expression. “My years as a painter provided the creative concepts,” he says. “My technical skills developed as I needed them in order to produce the visual effects I wanted. My path differed from tradition in that I did not learn a skill and then develop a style. The style came first and the method of working came after. For me, the image or visual expression is the most important and the technique is only important to hold the work together.
“I believe that each of us is unique and a total culmination of our life experiences. Therefore, we are ever-changing as we grow. Our personal expression is uniquely individual.”
