Three dimensional appliqué adds fascinating texture to this quilt. Circular yellow flowers are created using ruching, a technique in which a strip of gathered fabric is laid in concentric circles to build a raised flower center.
"This quilt took a year to make. I made the small blocks first, then the center, and finally the outside borders. Flowers from the small blocks are included in the center block and borders, adding continuity to the whole quilt. The only real decision I had to make in the design was whether to add the small triangles around the appliquéd blocks. Now I think they are one of the best ideas in the whole quilt."Label
Irma Gail Hatcher began quilting in 1982 after she attended her first quilt show. Since that time, she has become nationally known for her three-dimensional hand appliqué. She teaches around the country and is the author of several books on hand appliqué. In 1995 this quilt was judged to be a masterpiece quilt by the National Quilting Association, and in 1999 was selected as one of the “100 Best American Quilts of the 20th Century.”
