As I was searching through the music and dance of the Twenties, I learned of Josephine Baker. I found the portrait taken of her by George Hoyningen-Huene and found it to be the best representation of the sexual freedom many women found and the boldness that defined the time. The quilted halo and rays are nods to her later life as a WWII spy, her adoption of her Rainbow Tribe, her work in the Civil Rights Movement, and her conversion to Catholism.
