"This quilt is one of a series of limited edition miniature whole cloth quilts on mushroom pink Thai silk satin. It measures 16 inches x 16 inches. I found inspiration with this quilt, and many of my other quilts, in viewing the pressed metal ceilings from the Victorian era and also the beautiful 17th century plaster ceilings in European buildings. My father was a miniaturist and I used to marvel at his tiny dolls houses and shops and it inspired me to see how small I could make a quilt. This design was created for my daughter Elizabeth's 30th birthday quilt. I fell in love with machine trapunto in the late 1990's and have used it extensively in my work ever since. Trapunto allowed me the ability to create the patterns in high relief. I have always loved the sheen on silk satin and developed a starching method that enabled me to draw on the silk satin with soluble blue pens without the fabric moving. The quilt took approximately three days to draw up and around 60 hours to machine quilt using rayon thread. The quilt was drawn using my hand drawing techniques. The pattern was transferred using a light box and drawn on heavily starched fabric using soluble blue pens. The quilt top was trapuntoed by machine using the modern soluble thread method and then machine quilted. I love the challenge of making miniature quilts. I have a passion to make the design and technique work on as small a scale as practicable. It takes skill, perseverance, and patience to create a miniature quilt. I also love to teach other quilt makers about the art of the miniature quilt."
