"This quilt was conceived with the thought that if I made a gray quilt, the fur from my two gray cats wouldn't show! To make a gray quilt interesting and not drab, I wanted to use reflective fabric and threads, and lots of texture to make it look like hammered silver. I also wanted to use digitized machine embroidery in a way that was integral to the design of the quilt, so that the embroidery and quilting became a unified whole. The digitized machine embroidery designs from Zundt Designs were carefully positioned and stitched on the whole-cloth background, cross-hatched double-needle pintucked fabric was appliqued, and the spines for the feathers were stitched with decorative machine stitching. After free-motion quilting, the windows in the central circle were cut out and faced, and the free-standing lace inserts were attached. The free-stainding lace border and butterflies were also attached after quilting. Approximately 47,000 yards of thread were incorporated in this quilt!
