"Each year, I try to create a new miniature quilt. In 2003, I turned 50 years old and decided to celebrate with a special design. Looking at my collection of books with pictures of antique quilts, I found a quilt that was covered with simple birds. I used that idea as a beginning, adding a little pieced border and a border for quilting. I felt this made the overall design look like a complete quilt. I added a tiny piping in the binding (another challenge!). Stitched details (feet, eyes) added more interest to the birds. The size of the tiny circles on the peacocks' tails were a particular goal. I'm trying to see how small a circle I can successfully machine appliqué. Finally, if you count the birds, there are indeed 50 of them."Label
"I have been making miniature quilts for several years. All my life I have enjoyed working on a small scale. I have tiny sweaters I knit for my dolls when I was about ten years old. The control and precision of sewing machines available today allows me to push the limits of how small I am able to do machine applique. I am drawn to the preciousness of miniature objects. I want the viewer to keep coming closer and closer to my creations and feel some of the wonder I have for this itty bitty world. I am still amazed and humbled that my miniatures are awarded such high honors and have great regard for the other wonderful miniature quiltmakers who work in such different methods."
