"For over 125 years, every spring, the best 3 year old Thoroughbreds have competed in three major races. The winner of each race receives a ‘blanket’ and bouquet of flowers: roses for the Kentucky Derby, Black-eyed Susans for Pimlico's Preakness in Maryland and carnations go to the New York's Belmont Stakes winner. These races together make up the three legs of the ‘Triple Crown.’ In all these years only 11 horses have accomplished this feat. As a little girl I spent many a pleasant afternoon with my father at our local track in Fort Erie, Ontario. This quilt is dedicated to the fond memory of him, Richard C. Bishop, who inspired my love of these beautiful and courageous Thoroughbreds."
