"Rather than represent a single food item, we decided to represent food more holistically with the food pyramid. This quilt represents the food pyramid of our youth. Though it was intended to improve our eating habits, the pyramid shape itself was hard to comprehend and the idea of 40% of our daily intake being grains/carbohydrates was flawed. The pyramid has been retired and replaced by a new graphic to communicate our ideal eating habits--a plate, a much simpler representation of a balanced meal. Beyond the shape that makes clearer what we should be eating, the new version prescribes "protein", rather than specifically listing meat and now includes plant-based proteins. Hopefully, this version proves more successful."
