“I’m not very comfortable explaining my work. My quilts mean something to me, but they may mean something very different to someone else, and that is all right with me. I don’t like to limit people’s view of my work. For this quilt I started with one figure - the mountain man or white settler. The rest of the quilt developed from that. I often work that way, placing the first completed figure on my wall, looking at it and then seeing possibilities. The quilts are built up figure by figure. I try to put the viewer in the Native American's place. What are his thoughts? What is his world like?"
