“'Mariner’s Quilteenie' is an original composition of four mariner’s compasses, adhering closely to a traditional appearance. Its dark red-violet fabric was hand dyed, in my first experience with dyeing. The four inch compass designs are surrounded by borders and generous free form quilting, much of it in echo style. A tiny appliqué vine surrounds the center. I consider it a quiet reflection on quilts from the past. The back of quilt is also hand dyed. It has always been important to me to be original in quilts. I may draw in a primitive style and lack perspective, but it is the way my brain works. I love curves and circles; they appear in all my work. Recently I was taught to make perfect points, and make them fast, by Barbara Barber. Now, I see the beauty of all those little points. Free motion quilting, on my trusty Bernina, gives me hours of joy. I am able to lose myself in the process and float off to quilting heaven. 'Mariner’s Quilteenie' was made just to see if I could do it. Now I plan thinner points on smaller compasses for future projects. Quilting in miniature allows me to take on a challenge, yet finish before becoming overwhelmed."
