"An image from the past, thumbing through a library book, or walking down the street of a foreign city may plant a seed in my mind that may inspire a quilt. Starting with this small inspiration, a quilt may begin without my knowing how it will evolve. As I work, the quilt itself helps me know what to do next. The finished quilt is always a surprise, often surpassing any initial concept."

Suzanne Marshall began quilting in 1977 to make bed covers for her four children. She used scraps from making clothes and a library book on quilting. Self-taught, she has learned by trial and error. In 1989 she began entering national competitions, wanting critiques from judges. She has since won many awards, teaches and lectures around the country, and has written a book on appliqué. A retrospective exhibit of her work in 1994 raised funds for pediatric cancer research. This hand appliquéd, hand embroidered, hand quilted quilt took Suzanne three years to complete. Suzanne finished appliquéing the green borders of each block before deciding what images would fill them. Finally she decided to use her Scherenschnitte designs (paper cutwork designs) within the blocks to enhance the complex block borders. The choice of the red fabric seemed a natural complement to the green. Suzanne's final design step was to create a border that showcased the complex blocks – and to hope there was enough green fabric to carry out her plan. Luckily she did!
