Once the Hanging by a Thread quilt group decided to make this quilt, some members needed to learn the technique of raw-edge applique. A three-day workshop was held, and those members soon were up to speed. Bonnie Keller wrote, “Sometimes experience isn’t as important as having the eye and creative bent of an artist. What we have in common is our love of being in each other’s company- sharing quilting, creativity, and laughter.”
Bonnie developed the original patterns. Photographs of animals were taken or found, and ‘posterized’ using Photoshop. Then those images were refined so each pattern could be enlarged.Label
Bonnie tells a fun story about the making of the quilt involving the little mouse down in the right corner. "Ever since I put a mouse on my 'Organic Garden' quilt that the museum owns, I have tried to work a mouse into my quilts, if only in the quilting. The mouse in this quilt had a tail that hung down, and when I squared up the quilt, the tail was cut off. The finished quilt hung on my design wall for a while and the loss of the tail bothered me more and more. Finally I decided I could make a little stuffed tail that extended beyond the quilt edge. So many people just squeal when they discover that tail; it has been so much fun! Many times our problems allow opportunities for creative solutions that otherwise would never have been contemplated."Label
Bonnie continues, "Quilting has brought so much joy and creativity! I can't imagine my life without it. Not only has this craft become a perfect outlet for my artistic talents, but it also has brought such wonderful people and friendships into my life. I am so richly blessed!"
Noreen Jones wrote out this response when asked for input in filling out the form. It so perfectly says it for us all:
"The fabric of our lives. A quilt. More than pieces... Down through the ages women have sought out each other for companionship, for the sharing of everyday events in their lives, for comfort and solace during the depths of despair, and for the pure joy of giving of their talents, learning new things, and bringing new strengths into their lives.
As each member created their portion of 'Ms. MacDonald Had a Farm,' the quilt came alive with discoveries and new talents. Then the quilt gained a voice as it travelled on its many journeys to shows across the country. Viewers were thrilled as they identified with the parts that spoke to them. Delightful stories and beautiful ribbons came back to us, enhancing our pride and accomplishments, and making this experience one fantastic journey for our little group."
