“I have to ask myself, why if I can draw and paint, do I work with cloth?” asks Elizabeth Brimelow. “I think the answer has to be that the cloth itself adds another dimension to the work – it is not just the medium on which the image is placed. I use cloth for its tactile qualities. I love the intimacy of hand stitching and I also like the substance of large pieces of fabric. These seem to be traditional values. Traditional techniques are part of the ‘tools of the trade’ for any quiltmaker. I use several traditional techniques in my work, but have never made a traditional quilt. All my work starts with observational drawing. I live in a beautiful area. It is what I look at every day, it is what I draw and what I stitch.”
