"I began quilting in 1985. In 1987, I suddenly realized it was time to update my skills, learn new techniques, and use unfamiliar colors. No blues, no circles, no flowers--all the things I loved would have to go! Petroglyph was inspired by a canoe trip in Vermont that triggered consideration of ancient rock art. I searched for a new technique to help me realize my ideas. Complex Cloth by Jane Dunewold and Imagery on Fabric by Jean Ray Laury led me to experiment with bleach discharge. I cut images from freezer paper and ironed them shiny side down to solid black fabric. I laid the fabric down on my driveway and using sprayed the fabric with water and fresh bleach. I then hosed the fabric thoroughly to rinse out the bleach and then neutralized the bleach with a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar. Other sections of Petroglyph were created in this manner using snips of cedar trees. The fabric must be completely rinsed because any bleach left in the fabric will continue to eat away at the cloth."
