"The Phoenix is a symbol about dying and being reborn out of the ashes of living. I love living in a city whose name reminds me of that ongoing human experience. In making the quilt, I spent a lot of time looking, buying, discarding fabrics, until I had the flow of hue and value that would make the massive wings seem to lift. I found the head to be the hardest; it had to look strong and project the intent to rise up out of the chaos, or despair, or whatever. Later, I noted a picture of myself and my dog in front of the quilt, and found that the head was Baron’s, the gentle, watchful Doberman."
