It took two long years of work on this quilt and another two to get permission to use the figures in the photo. This scene glorifies the National Hockey League and her passionate love of the game. Not known for depicting the human figure- let alone facial features- Shirley tried to position the players so faces were minimal.
Renowned throughout the quilt world for her rendition of horse racing track dirt, Shirley writes, “Ice chips are a natural carry-over.”
Shirley says she gave up a good paying teaching job after 33 years to make quilts for little or no money. “So obviously I love it. Not a hobby but a passion, plus, it keeps me out of mischief.”
