"Seasons of Life" was designed by Sandra Mollon in the Baltimore Album medallion style. Most of the designs are original, a few blocks have historical origins. “Autumns Bounty,” with its charming squirrel was derived from an antique (c.1830) theorem painting from the collection of the Oyster Bay Historical society. Two of the blocks had their origin from the Arts and Crafts period, "Winter Poinsettia” was derived from a cushion cover embroidered by Annie May Hegeman in the early 1900’s, and the “Blackberry Corner” was derived from an unknown student's drawings (c.1900) found in the book, “Textiles of the Arts and Crafts Period” by Linda Parry. Embroidery by Helen M. Stevens had an impact, although not an exact design for two blocks, “Among the Foxgloves,” and “Hedgehog in the Garden.” Many of the elements of design are similar to designs found in both contemporary and antique Baltimore Album quilts, in the style published in many books by Elly Sienkiewicz. The fabrics are silk dupioni and various hand dyed silks. Embellishments include beading, silk ribbon embroidery, hand embroidery with both cotton and silk floss, inking with All Purpose Ink by Tsukineko, and couched yarn and trim. The quilt took three years to design and hand appliqué, and a year to machine quilt.
