"This 14" x 14" quilt is a whole-cloth quilt. All of the details of the quilt are embroidered with silk embroidery floss and silk ribbon in 4mm and 7mm widths. There are 17 different embroidery stitches used, and it was completed in two weeks, working evenings and one weekend. Embroidery is very relaxing to me, and it is fun to see the design develop with each stitch.
Baltimore Album quilts intrigue me, and it takes many, many hours to complete a large album quilt. By using silk ribbon, embroidery stitches, and designs common to these beautiful mid-nineteenth century quilts, I was able to make a miniature Baltimore style quilt with three-dimensional flowers in a small fraction of the time an appliquéd quilt takes to stitch.
Gardening, especially flowers, is one of my hobbies. I love roses, whether they are wild ones like those that grow in the state of Iowa where I grew up, or the groomed single-stem rose that my husband surprises me with from time to time that says 'I love you.' It seems very appropriate that my little Baltimore style quilt should be titled 'Smitten with Flowers.'"
