A pattern purchased in 1983 was the inspiration for the design of this quilt in 1993. Marjorie became enthusiastic about Jacobean designs when a student transposed crewel bedhanging designs into appliqué patterns.
"Although the shape of the tree, flowers and leaves follows the original, nothing else is the same. Broderie perse in leaves, birds, flowers, tree trunk, butterflies, and a rooster are my additions. Instead of ordinary hummocks I designed a base for the tree and, using 40 fabrics, formed a base for the center. The quilt was then put aside for four years.
Some of the borders were adapted from a Jacobean bed hanging that was done in crewel work. The large flowers were hand quilted and embroidered before being appliquéd to the quilt."
