“'Spring Winds' gave me an opportunity to use a different palette and play with my collection of calico prints. What makes this quilt eye-catching is the fact that appliqué has been done on a print rather than a solid. I was fortunate to find positive/negative gray and white floral prints that were bold enough to be seen but subdued enough to look neutral behind the appliqué motifs. Since making this quilt I have consciously tried to use prints rather than solids, because it is pattern that most obviously distinguishes works in fabric from those in other mediums, such as paint.”
