“My quilts have always been about things that I dream about, wish for, or remember – like non-pictorial visual diaries that have interior meaning that only I may recognize, but that will hopefully intrigue, or at least attract, the viewer’s attention and appreciation. My ‘Mountain and the Magic’ series chronicles images and memories from six teaching trips to Japan between 1986 and 1993.

“My ‘Mountain and The Magic’ series chronicles images and memories from six teaching trips to Japan between 1986 and 1993. Although none of the quilts can be described as pictorial, all contain some recognizable elements such as visual references to torii gates, origami cranes, Mt. Fuji, etc. The composition of 'Night Lights' however, was more directly inspired – by a photograph taken in darkness, recording the reflections of lantern lights on the water. Structures on the shore of Tokyo Bay and the distant lights of the city were part of the photograph and are also present in the quilt.”

Thoughts on quiltmaking: “My quilts have always been about things that I dream about, wish for, or remember – like nonpictorial visual diaries that have interior meanings that only I may recognize, but that will hopefully intrigue, or at least attract, viewer’s attention and appreciation. I have never taught workshops in which students learn how to make a quilt that looks like any of mine – believing that inside every quiltmaker, there is at least one quilt that no one else in the world can make as well, as beautifully, and as eloquently. That quilt deserves to be made, from the heart, by the one person who knows what they are talking about! My goal as a teacher is to help each person discover, define and describe their own moment, record their own memory, and express their own dream. My goal as a quiltmaker is to continue to remember and continue to dream.”
