"This completely machine-made quilt pays tribute to the U.S. space program. Our father was an Air Force fighter pilot in WWII, and we watched all space launches culminating in the first man on the moon. NASA and space exploration are so important to our future," say Holly and Nickels, who are sisters. "Designs on the quilt represent the history of U.S. space flight. Blocks include Rocket Boys, the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle missions and the International Space Station. In free-motion quilting on the outside border is a written history of the missions, starting with Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier through the first space shuttle launches." "We included a memorial block for the astronauts who lost their lives in the space program. We shared equally in the design of the quilt, and both of us worked on the machine appliqué. Pat did the majority of the machine piecing and Sue did most of the machine quilting. We hope our quilt provides a chance to look at the past and forward to our final frontier."
