"Corn and Beans blocks are incorporated into a portrayal of a traditional Native American way of growing food. The low growing squash helps to control weeds and keep the soil moist, the beans provide nitrogen to help the plants grow, and the corn provides a stalk for the beans to climb. In addition to providing a balanced diet, this trio thrives like three inseparable sisters.
I knew I wanted to portray vegetables in my challenge quilt, as they are my absolute favorite foods. As I played with several possible designs, I read about Michelle Obama planting a Three Sisters Garden on the White House property, sparking the idea for my setting. A Corn and Beans traditional block fit perfectly into the design, with my biggest obstacle being to use a variety of colors in a garden that is usually almost entirely green.
In this portrayal of a traditional Native American way of growing food, the low to the ground squash help to control weeds and keep the soil moist, the beans provide nitrogen to help the plants grow, and the corn provides a stalk for the beans to climb. This trio thrives like three inseparable sisters, working together in harmony and providing nutritious food."
