Artist Commentary

"The title suggests how over a period of many years I have received fabric of different types, sizes, vintages, and colors, from different people in different countries. These accumulate until suddenly I realize I have everything I need for a particular design. The back ground itself has a design made from four kinds of aizome fabric. Superimposed is a simple quiet rectangular design which draws the viewer into the quilt." Of the reverse, Emiko writes, "The main part of the design suggests a roll of cord gradually unraveling, using the back of curtain fabric (the front was too shiny). Comparable shapes giving dimension to the design come from hand-dyed cotton given by a friend more than ten years earlier."

Welcoming Fate is one of 45 double-sided quilts made by Emiko. Although most people assume that her reversible quilts are created by constructing two quilt top surfaces separately and then joining them together, this isn't the case. Although the number of blocks depends on the quilt size, all the two-sided blocks are constructed individually and only joined together when all are completed.
