Oil PaintingDescription
A table, whose covering appears to have been warped, becomes the space for an arrangement of anemones in a copper vase suspended by a thin spiraled black steel stand. An ashtray accompanies the flowers on the table, standing in the foreground. Cool blues and greens are incorporated on the ashtray, and deep purple, reds, and greens predominate in the flowers. An excess amount of leaves, uncommon for anemones, are included in the bouquet, spiraling down the vase and onto the ashtray. The structured, stable and neutral background space, combined with the possibly unstable vase and table, juxtaposes the stability of the space and time period as a whole.Collection

Provenance Detail
Created under the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project (1930s–1940s), this collection of easel paintings was originally installed at the Mount Morris Tuberculosis Sanitorium in Livingston County, New York. Following the sanitorium’s closure in 1970, the artworks were abandoned and remained in storage until their rediscovery decades later. Now preserved and exhibited by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts (GVCA), the collection is housed at the New Deal Museum in Mount Morris. Current efforts include digitization, high-resolution photography, and the creation of an online archive to ensure long-term public access and research availability.General Notes
