023.20.06x: View of residential area from a cliff. The person who took this original photo must have followed a rather rough trail to reach this location. It would have followed a path along what today is Wyld Street. In the foreground is a large rock formation with only moss, wild flowers, grass, and tree stumps. The 1900 photo shows the transformation of the landscape from verdant forest to burgeoning town in only 20 years. In the distance to the extreme left can be seen the steeple of St Mary of the Lake Catholic Church on Main Street (later the the site of the Cochrane Dunlop building, now the Block Public House). In the centre, on the corner of Ferguson and Main, across from the Queen’s Hotel (the present CIBC building), is the Ferguson building, identifiable by its twin towers. The building was destroyed in a fire in 1904 and with it burnt many of the town records. To the right can be seen the steeple of the Baptist Church on Main West, now an empty lot behind the Days Inn.
