Description

Photograph on Christmas Card featuring North Bay's original airport. The original airport was a tiny air harbour on Trout Lake, specifically at Trout Mills. Built in 1923, it handled flying boats—airplanes with boat-shaped hulls, which took off and landed on water. Because they could take off and land on rivers, lakes and the sea, the flying boats were used heavily by the Canadian and provincial governments and commercial companies to explore and map the country, and move passengers and cargo throughout Canada. The police used them for things like fisheries patrols and to intercept smugglers, and the air force flew the flying boats during their defence of the country and in search-and-rescue and mercy flights. The air harbour was set up on Trout Lake since North Bay was, and still is, the crossroads of Canada--flying boats regularly stopped at the harbour during flights to the north, south, east and west of the country. Information provided by Captain Doug Newman.
