Description

Images of airfield including: a) Image of airfield including C-47 Dakoa (a Transport airplan used in 1944-45 to train Allied military and civilian aircrew). b) Image of airfield with the Trans-Canada Air Lines Hangar to the right; the two furthermost houses to the left were used by the airport with one belonging to the airport manager. Both houses were taken over by the Air Force base in the 1950s and are used today as temporary quarters for visitors. All of the other buildings were built by the Royal Air Force for its special flying school which taught military and civilian airment from 23 countries how to fly over the Atlantic Ocean. These included a guard house for controlling access to the airfield, a small hospital, an administration building, and a small fire station. All of the buildings except the double hangar were demolished in the early 1950s as the much larger RCAF air base was being built. Images of North Bay airport donated by family of airport manager Lorne Hicks. Information provided by Doug Newman.
