Photographs related to the railway industry saved by donor, with a range of older black and white photos and more recent colour photographs. Includes photos from O.N.R. (Ontario Northland Railway) shops, yards, and offices. Individual items include: 020.49.143: George Roads, operator at ONR North Bay yard office, B&W photo 020.49.144: ONR diesel engine #1733 in North Bay yards, Pellet cars in background. This engine & coaches came to North Bay for our 1982 celebration of 100 years of rail in North Bay. The data on reverse says 1967. This is incorrect as this event took place in 1982. No Date. 020.49.198: 3x5 colour pix of a 40 foot ONR box car in the old green paint scheme, 1981. 020.49.223: 1 3x4 colour photo of the former ONR back shops on the east side of the ONR yard in North Bay. There are approx 6 RR tracks in front of the sheds complex. There is a loading ramp just in front of the green building which provides a slanted ramp to the ground. We see 3 sets of power transmission poles, lines & 1 transformer mounted on the far left pole. To the right there is a high white storage building. 020.49.224: 1 3x4 colour photo of the same green shop as in photo 223. It shows the left end of the same green shop. Large power poles are in front of the building with a transformer mounted on the left pole. There is a switch stand with a red "target" above the switch mechanism & a red & green lamp mounted on the top of the switch stand. We see 2 doors for shops entry & a faded red wooden shed to the left with a wood storage case on the ground adjacent 020.49.225: 1 3x4 colour photo of the former rear shops in the ONR yard. There are 4 RR tracks in front of the shed complexes with a wooden platform between the sheds & the tracks. There is a continuation of the green shops mentioned in the 2 prior photos. To the left of the green structures is a 1 story, red storage shed approx. 100 feet long x 40 feet wide with open stalls facing the tracks. There is a small green building between the green & red storage building which is a scale house for weighing RR rolling stock. The weigh scale can be seen on the track in front of the scale shack. On the west side of the red storage shed is a 2 story building with a ventilation canopy on the top of the roof. Opposite this building we see gondolas, & box cars sitting on the tracks. 020.49.226: 1 3x4 colour photo of the machine shop attached to the roundhouse in the ONR yards at North Bay. In the foreground we see 1 RR track into this yard which is piled with metal RR rolling stock wheels that are repaired & awaiting repairs. There is a small, low overhead crane that could lift these wheels for placement during loading or unloading in & out of the shops. The large shops have very large windows to allow daylight inside the shops area. There is a large door on the end of this shop to accept rolling stock or engines. There is an ONR diesel engine visible beside this shop 020.49.227: 1 3x4 colour photo showing the west end of the machine shops. There are 2 tracks running alongside these 2 shops buildings. 4 shop staff are leaving the shop & walking across the tracks. A large door is open at the west end of this shop. 020.49.228: 1 3x4 Black & white photo showing ONR diesel #1507 on a track & attached to a box car. There are 3 tracks in front of the engine. A note on the back states "new diesels." 020.40.229: 1 4x5 colour photo of ONR steam engine # 137 at rest in the ONR shops area in North Bay. There are no dates or data on this or prior photos. Details have been provided by Val Croswell. 020.49.230: 1 4x5 colour photo of ONR steam engine # 137 in the ONR shops area of the ONR yards in North Bay. It is pulling a baggage car & there could be a full train of coaches attached but our view is cut off by the building on the rite with 2 staff members talking while standing in the doorway of the building. 020.49.231: 1 4x5 black & white photo of a steam engine moving at speed as CPR train #2 from Vancouver to Montreal departs North Bay. This detail is printed on the back of the photo 020.49.232: 1 4x5 colour photo showing a red & silver ONR van leaving the ONR yard in North Bay. We see 2 ONR conductors standing on the rear end of the van & a brakeman sitting in the cupola on top of the van. The year 1967 is printed on the rear of the photo. 020.49.233: 1 4x6 colour photo of ONR engine #2000 pulling a passenger train & stopped at the new ONR station in North Bay. It seems to be on display as many people & children are walking around the train to inspect it 020.49.234: 1 4x6 colour photo of ONR diesel # 1803 parked in front of the ONR station in North Bay. This engine is on the main line & we see the siding on the left. This siding has 3 signs for the siding & we see the double signal towers just beyond the siding turnout. We can see the escarpment in the distance & the track skirts around this very high high hill as it travels north. Details provided by Val Croswell. 020.49.235: 1 4x6 colour photo of ONR engine 1803. The photographer has moved back approx 100 feet to take this shot. This engine is standing alone & is obviously waiting for a train to arrive and possibly switch engines. 020.49.236: 1 4x6 colour photo of "The Northland" passenger train with no data. Rear section of ONR diesel #2000 plus 3 coaches & a power car at the back of this train set. Over the 1st coach there is a peaked roof section of the ONR train station in North Bay. The camera is looking toward the RR crossing on the North Bay bypass near Fisher St. 020.49.237: 1 4x6 colour photo of an older man posing in front of the ONR diesel engine #2000. There is another older man taking a picture from beside the same engine. It can be seen that this is the same engine as in the prior photo 020.49.238: A colour 4x6 photo of ONR diesel engine #1803, sitting on the main track in front of the ONR train station. It must be on display as many persons have been allowed onto the engine & standing on the walkway holding onto the handrailing. 020.49.239: 1 4x6 colour photo of the ONR power car #204. This car provides electrical power for all the passenger cars. It does not pull the train. This unit was built from a retired B unit from the USA . It was entirely re-built by the ONR shops in North Bay. 020.49.240: 1 4x5 colour photo of a diesel engine that was painted in grey primer in the ONR shops at North Bay. This shows a retired GP-9 engine from Labrador as per the info on the back of this photo. This engine is sitting in the ONR yards & we see an ONR RS-3 on the adjacent track that is moving a green ONR passenger coach. 020.49.241: 1 4x6 colour photo of an eastbound CPR freight train at Geneva Lake in Aug of 1996. I believe this date should be 1990 as per the writing on the next 2 photos. 020.49.242: 1 4x6 colour photo of the same train in photo 241. On the rear of this train are 2 GO coaches. The remarks on reverse indicate this is the same location as #241. 020.49.243: 1 4x6 colour photo showing the same train in the 2 prior photos. We can see the tail end of a GO coach & the last car is carrying a tractor trailer. 020.49.244: 1 4x6 colour photo of a west bound freight train at Geneva Lake, Aug 1990. 020.49.245: 1 3x3 colour photo of ONR van # 100 on the rear of a freight train. Film processing date shows Jan 66 020.49.246: 1 4x5 colour photo of ONR steam engine #137 pulling a baggage car. No data, location unknown. 020.49.247: 1 4x5 colour photo of ONR steam engine #137 pulling the Centennial train in 1967. Appears to be standing at rest as 2 uniformed staff members are standing together on the ground beside the engine & opposite the train driver 020.49.248: 1 4x5 colour photo of the same 2 staff members holding documents & have now moved much closer to the train engine driver & there is a discussion going on. 020.49.249: 1 4x6 colour postcard titled THE POLAR BEAR EXPRESS, with a notation on reverse,"Cochrane to Moosonee, Ont". ONR #1510 & another F7 diesel are pulling 4 Chevron paint scheme passenger coaches, 1 fluted aluminum passenger coach & 6 green ONR coaches. There is an insert photo of a polar bear at the tourist info A-frame hut in Cochrane. 020.49.250: 1 4x6 colour photo of CPR steam engine #1201, from Ottawa, attending the North Bay Centennial ,"100 years of rail. 1982". The info on the reverse states this is in 1967 but that is incorrect. (Val Croswell) 020.49.251: A colour 4x6 postcard showing the AGAWA TOUR TRAIN crossing a RR bridge at Sault Ste.
