Description

Various photographs. Subjects include: "Master Mechanics Meeting", railway workers and staff members, "Canadian Pacific" trains and "Robot" train, and domestic life (boys and dog, houses, old cars, a meal table scene, the "S.S. Manitoulin" ship, and numerous people posing). Volunteer Val C.'s notes on pictures: "Reynolds CPR Pix Robot Control Car 4 CPR Train Wrecks - ONT to B.C. Plans - turntable - Trails - glacier Area: - Old Loop RR Map - Spirr Tunnel Area Feb 09 Val C." Specific items include: 020.51.34: 1-3x5, colour photo of a 1 story bungalow on a street amongst other homes. No data. The home is complete & lived in with many flower beds across the front of the house.. It appears a new sodded lawn has been applied as there is a hand roller sitting in the driveway. No house # is evident. The photo was developed Aug. 1955. 020.51.35: 1-3x5 colour photo of same house as previous. It now appears this was a B&W photo , touched up with green on the roof, grass & flower beds.. In fact, if you hold the pix under a good lite you can see the brush marks left by the painter. No data 020.51.36:1-3x5 hand coloured photo of same home with a lady standing at the front steps.. 4 house # are evident but not clear enough to ID. No data 020.51.37: 1 part of a 3x5 colour photo of a man standing in front of a house. He is nicely dressed in a suit & holding a clear plastic bag of what could be flowers. There was someone else standing beside him in this photo as we can see a hand on his shoulder. No ID on the house or persons. No data. 020.51.38: 1-3x5 colour photo of Can. Pacific wrecking crane about to lift a passenger diesel engine that is derailed & up against a rock cut. No data for the engine or crane. 020.51.39: 1-3x4, B&W photo of an antique steam locomotive replica being built for Shriners convention for the Karnack Temple Directors Unit, Montreal. It is located in a shop area as there are adjacent tracks & 2 box cars at a loading platform beside the replica. No data. 020.51.40: 1-3x4, B&W photo of the front of Shriners locomotive replica. Some of the RR shops are visible in the back ground. There is #205 mounted over the headlite to ID this engine with a Shriners Club sword mounted on the boiler front. This engine has a "cow catcher", 2 ditch lites, full windows across the cab front with windshield wipers for each side & a large "diamond" smoke stack. It looks ready to go with white flags mounted on each side on the front. No data. 020.51.41: 1-3x4, B&W photo of 2 healthy dogs standing together at the end of a boat dock. There is land across the body of water with a larger boat dock & a launch tied to it. No data. 020.51.42: 1-10x12, B&W photo of a very early Can. Pac. steam loco motive #152. It is coupled to a wooden 38 ft box car on a siding serving 2 or more warehouses as shown. Everything in this interesting photo shows a very early settlement as the buildings are erected with fresh new lumber & unpainted as yet. The track in the foreground has not been completely ballasted as you can see where ballasting stopped at the left side of the photo. Also we have a large yard that has just been created. If you look at the 2nd telephone pole from the left you can see 2 siding turning off to enter a repair shop visible behind the house (full length).. On another siding we see box cars & flat cars used for railroad construction. It is evidently a scene "in the mountains" & could be the reference made to Ladysmith in prior folders a day or so ago. 020.51.43: 1-10x12 B&W photo of CPR master mechanics standing outside the Angus shops in 1911. This is a very clear & focused group of men who realize "they have it made". No lay off notices for these guys! I really like the relaxed pose of these gents. Notice # 13. I like the confidence seen here, e.g. cigars, hands in pockets. Every one of them has the rite hat. Notice all the different shirt collars, ties vs bow ties. All persons are named! 020.51.44: 1-5x7 B&W photo of the print out desk on the dynamometer coach. This clearly shows the many instruments of measurements available for inspection by this coach as it "rides the rails". No data. 020.51.45: 1-3x5 B&W photo of a temporary shelter erected by a photographer situated in "full sun". This allows him to take a good photo not ruined by too much sunlight. Notice the phone box sitting on the board. No data. 020.51.46: 01-3x3 colour photo of 2 men beside a CPR diesel locomotive. The man standing with a fedora hat is wearing a fresh set of coveralls to keep his office attire covered. We can see a shirt & tie there. He must be inspecting the equipment or the procedure of the day. No data. 020.51.47: 1-3x4 colour photo of 3 men beside a CPR flat car. No data. This could be "after the train wreck" & time for a little chat??? 020.51.48: 1-3x4 B&W photo of a young girl sitting on a wall around the fountain in front of Demarco's confectionary on Algonquin Ave., North Bay, Ont.. The photo is wrapped in cellophane. No data. 020.51.49: 13x5 B&W photo of many bags of sand loaded onto a depressed centre flat car. A large metal tank is loaded onto the centre section. No data. 020.51.50:14x6, B&W photo of a man& a large dog & a small child crouched at a rock cut beside railway tracks.. No data. This is a duplicate of the same photo in a folder previous to this. 020.51.51: 1-4x6 B&W photo of a group of men standing & sitting together. The background is so black it is impossible to recognize much more; however, please note the story on the reverse. 020.51.52: 1-10x12, B&W photo of bridge, no data.. THIS IS THE SURPRISE CREEK BRIDGE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA. 270 FT HIGH, BEING RE=BUILT & TESTED WITH 6 STEAM ENGINES & WORKERS PLACED ON THE STRUCTURE. 020.51.53: 1-8x10, B&W photo of a 6 stall steam engine round house. No data. 1 stall has doors closed while 2 others have engines running yet parked outside the doors. Engine & shop staff standing on & around the engines. This depicts the very early days of railroading in Canada. 020.51.54: 1-8x10, B&W photo of a ROBOT CONTROL PANEL. We have a typed "story" of what is going on here. 020.51.55: 1-10x12, B&W photo of a CPR passenger train within the Rocky Mtns. No data 020.51.56: 1-10x12, B&W photo of 4 Budd passenger cars with a hand written explanation 020.51.57:1-6x8, B&W photo of a presentation by office staff to shop workers who are all standing in front of a 40 ft CPR box car # 53320. No data 020.51.58: 1-10x12, B&W photo of a CPR BUDD car loading up near a station, ready for departure. We see baggage handlers, train engineer, shop chimney & adjacent track with a mail car being attended to. .A hand written note is on reverse. 020.51.59: 1-10x12, B&W photo of a CPR BUDD car being re-railed by crane #414330. Several on lookers watching proceedings. 020.51.60: 1-8x10, B&W photo of a broken wheel on a passenger coach due to frost damage.. No data 020.51.64: 1-8x10, B&W interior photo of a wash room coach. No data. 020.51.65: 1-4x6, B&W photo of a box car that has derailed & toppled down an embankment or off a bridge & is lying parallel to the track but in the snow. 6 workmen can be seen wrapping steel cables around the box car in order to raise it back to the surface. No data 020.52.66:1-4x6, B&W photo showing the wreckage of more than 1 box car crashed at the entrance to a rock tunnel. The exit of the same tunnel can be seen just above the roof of the 1 car. No data. 020.51.67: 1-3x5 colour photo of a Canadian Pacific Crest attributed to Frank Reynolds.. This, in fact solves the mystery man so evident in many of the photos regarding the ROBOT CAR 1 in this folder & the ones prior. This was Col. Reynolds of the Ontario Northland Railway in North Bay, Ont. who made the trip west to see the CPR test the introduction of ROBOT CONTROL cars for handling remote diesel locomotives mid train. Val Croswell, North Bay. 020.51.68: 1 - 8 x 6, B&W photo of 3 CPR staff members in discussion at trackside beside a diesel locomotive. No Data.... but a "running tradesman" is briefing 2 officials?? 020.51.69: 1 - 8x6, B&W photo of CPR office staff & tradesmen at a training seminar posing trackside in front of a 40 ft. box car. No Data; however, 1 official in a suit & tie, who is standing behind the 1st man kneeling, at the left, is conspicuos in several photos both prior to this shot & after as well. I believe he is from a North Bay, Ont, railroad who is investigating the use of Robot power control cars. His name is unknown to me at this time. 020.51.70: 1 -10 x 12, B&W photo of 8 men inside an office. I man is receiving an award. No data. 020.51.71: 1 - 4x12, B&W photo of a wood burning steam engine of THE NORTH WEST COAL & NAVIGATION CO., ENGINE OF CLASS 1-6, LETHBRIDGE, date unknown. Handwritten note; "This is the locomotive you saw at Cathedral". Stamped in red ink; from O.S.A.LAVALLEE, 74 Durocher Ave., Montreal 15 Canada 020.51.72: 1-6x12, B&W photo of the CPR Kenora Loco Dept consisting of men & women from the offices & floor. A very clear photo where all are easily identified; however, there is no data. 020.51.73:1-8x10, B&W photo of a manager & 5 tradesmen standing on a shop track in front of a CLC diesel loco # 4052. The sanding tower, water tank & shops are visible behind the locomotive set. A loading crane & freighter boat is in the water nearby. no data. Note: There is no # for this 8x10, B&W photo. It is simply labelled CANADIAN PACIFIC PHOTO (NOV, 1967). There is a typed explanation stapled to this photo 020.51.74: 1-10x12, B&W photo of the upper floor of a "dome coach" at nite. No data. No passengers. 020.51.75: 1-10x12, B&W photo of the lower interior of a dome coach, not occupied, no data 020.51.76: 1-10x12, B&W photo. Duplicate of 73 020.51.77: 1-10x12, B&W photo of work being done around a box car near an exit door to a shop. 5 workmen around this car. Reverse is stamped COMINCO, file #EV2023-3, credit cominco 020.51.78: 1-10x12, B&W photo of a male operator at the console of a Dynamometer car. Reverse is stamped in red ink, photo by Nicholas Morant 020.51.79: 1-5x8, B&W photo of 3 CPR steam engine crew men who just brought in a train on a cold winter nite.. 2 shop crew are meeting then along with a superintendent in formal attire. A typed "story" is on reverse, providing ID & location of Cartier for Mr. C. Bain's last trip. 020.51.80: 1-5x8, B&W photo of a man, child & large dog at a rock cut beside train tracks. No data. 020.51.81: 1-3x10, B&W photo of ROBOT 1, mid train, attached to 2 diesel engines that are moving a train under a highway bridge. No data 020.51.82: 1-6x8,B&W photo showing 2 steam engines inside a repair shop. I is being lifted high in the shop for placement at another stall. No data. 020.51.83: 1-8x12, B&W photo of the ROYAL TRAIN pulled by steam loco #2850. A man in a suit is standing on the running boards of the engineer's side making an adjustment to an appliance on top of the boiler. The paint scheme plainly indicates this is the royal train of 1939. No data. 020.51.84: 1-8x12, B&W photo of a presentation being made with smiles & humour.. The gent on the left is the person I think is from a North Bay railway..No data. 020.51.85: 1-8x10 B&W CPR photograph by Nicholas Morant showing a CPR diesel #5557 hauling a freight train in the mountains. No data. 020.51.86: 1-8x10 B&W photo of 2 CPR SD-40 engines, mid train with a Robot car attached, in the mountains & going into a tunnel. No data. 020.51.87: 1-8x10 B&W photo of 2 men in suits sitting on the ground floor of a CPR dome car. No data 020.51.88: 1 8x10 B&W (CPR stamped) photo of CPR wood burning steam locomotive #363 standing on a wharf beside a 3 story steam passenger boat named NAKUSP. Truman & Co photo, no data. Research by Val Croswell in 2023 on this vessel showed a rear paddle wheel photo of this boat in 1900. This is a wonderful clear & perfect contrast photo that shows every detail of this scene with the train, boat & water all in focus. The train engine is steaming & the tender is very full with wood fuel. The boat is being loaded or unloaded from both sides as we can see a ramp off the boat onto the very short wood baggage car of the train. The train engine is a very early 4-4-0 wood burning steam locomotive with a wide "pan smoke stack" to reduce the incidence of sparks that would set the forest on fire adjacent to the RR tracks. There are many men sitting & standing on the bow of the boat & a few on the 2nd deck. A very well dressed man in a bowler hat is standing on the front of the tender behind the fireman's seat. 020.51.89: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a very long CPR freight train winding its way along a river in the mountains. There are 2 CPR SD-40 diesel engines mid train with a robot car attached. There is a Nicholas Morant stamp on reverse. No data 020.51.90: 1-8x10 B&W photo showing a CPR 2-8-0 "musher engine", #1006 (a pusher engine used to assist trains over steep roadbed areas). Printed on the lower front of photo is DJ Murray & son, "engineers", James Cosford, fireman & JD Nicholson hostler (engine driver in the repair shops area only). Rogers Pass, B.C. No date given. This is another excellent contrast photo showing every detail. Note the "dress code" for the engineer. 3 piece suit, white shirt, tie & jacket all covered by a pair of bib coveralls & matching coat in white with a bowler hat. The young lad is very fancy as well. 020.51.91: 1-8x10 B&W photo of CPR special Steam engine #2850 that hauled the Royal train across Canada in 1939 to carry King George the 6th & Queen Elizabeth. There is no data given other than a stamp on reverse stating "photo-Canadian Pacific, Press Bureau, Vancouver, B.C.." Note the "crown" on the front of the walkway side panel, the #s 2850 in "gold" coloured paint & the large coat of arms on the tender side. This engine is immaculate & could have been readied to go by the 8 workers who are shown in very dirty work clothes as they stand beside this engine. They are very attentive to a man in a suit & hat who is speaking to an elderly gent. Everyone is all smiles. Note: these workers are not the staff who operated the train while in Royal service. Special long time service employees were appropriately dressed in clean attire to move the Royal couple along the tracks. 020.51.92: 1-8x10 B&W air photo of a freight train derailment. Data provided shows "mile 51, Crowsnest Sub, Train 980 - 2401K July 9/66 (46 cars derailed). This event took place on a straight stretch of track along a 2 lane dirt service road with perhaps 16 cars stopped to view the wreck. A few persons are standing by the farmer's fence. I suggest this just happened as there are no emergency vehicles on site nor a work train to get the freight cars back on tracks. Several box cars are wrecked & lumber contents spilled out of box cars. There are damaged tank cars but no smoke or fire is visible, nor is the power that pulled the train. 020.51.93: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a winter scene showing the same 2 CPR SD-40 diesel engines with a Robot car attached. The train on a straight, flat section rails near a lumber mill, No data. 020.51.94: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a bank of winter ice that has begun to melt in the mountains. No data nor any RR effects visible. 020.51.95: 1-8x10 B&W photo showing a desk area inside a RR coach that is encompassed by gauges, clocks, speedometers, & a graph recorder showing tracking results on the chart. No data provided but there are clues to what this is about. Note the sign on the exit door behind the desk monitor station which states "built by Angus shops". This shop complex is owned by the CPR & located in Montreal, Quebec. I suggest this is a "track dynamometer coach" specially designed & built to monitor motive power performance which enables the CPR to obtain maximum performance from a locomotive design due to tractive effort, pulling power with variable loads, variable track conditions & elevations, etc. 020.51.96: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a large group of men all dressed up for a group shot. No data but there is a handstamp on reverse stating; ALCO-GE diesel electric locomotive school, Education Dept., American Locomotive Co., Schenectady, 5, N.Y. 020.51.97: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a CPR freight train showing 3 SD-40 diesel locomotives with a dynamometer coach behind the engines & they are approaching a lumber mill. This confirms my expectation listed in photo 95. They are pulling the same freight train in previous photos with the robot car mid train. No data. 020.51.98: Duplicate of #97 020.51.99: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a small settlement in the mountains. No data other than a CPR hand stamp on reverse. I can see a hotel sign, & 6 other buildings on the right side of the photo. On the left side is a small steam locomotive, a water tank for the trains, perhaps a small station & 4 other buildings near the water tank. There are 5 hydro poles serving the area & the steam engine is at rest with steam escaping straight into the air. The area in the photo was cleared of trees prior & now there are many stumps still in the ground showing 3 feet of snow was on the ground when they were cut down... There are several stumps with root bundles on the side of a roadway, near a white tent & a large common backhouse on site. 020.51.100: 1-8x10 B&W photo (with no data) of a very early automobile fitted with large open spoke flanged wheels for operation on railway tracks. On board is the chauffeur, a man dressed like foreign royalty with his man servant & a CPR conductor in the rear seats. Research identifies this car as a 1902 De Dietrich as per Val Croswell. At least 3 sets of RR tracks show here as well as 2 Canadian Pacific box cars. A group of men & boys in suits are watching this car on the tracks. There is a sign behind them stating "Walk your horse". In the background is a wharf scene with a warehouse & 3 masts of a cargo boat in the water. On reverse is a CPR hand stamp, "photo Canadian Pacific, printed in Canada". 020.51.101: 1-5x6 B&W photo of the Thomas Reynolds steam engine stopped at a train station at Kemptville, Ont The following, in good handwriting, is recorded upon reverse; "Original picture of St. Lawrence & Ottawa engine Thomas Reynolds taken at Kemptville 1878 after it was changed from wood to coal with the diamond stack. Engr Frank David in cab window. 020.51.102: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a CPR grain train with 2 SD 40's & a Robot car mid train on a straight section of track at the base of a mountain beside a body of water in winter. 020.51.103: 1-8x10 B&W photo of the "Canadian" in the Maroon & grey paint scheme, beside a river in the mountains. No data. 020.51.104: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a 4-4-0 coal burning steam engine at rest in a town, as 1 house & another building are behind this engine. There are 4 crew men standing on the engine & on the ground. No smoke is visible from the stack. On the reverse is printed, Dominion Atlantic engine in Nova Scotia. A CPR hand stamp is also on reverse. 020.51.105: 1-8x10 B&W photo of CPR steam engine # 1076 with a Bellpaire fire box standing on a turntable at Rogers Pass in 1902 (as per data on reverse). A good photo that would enable identification of the 3 crew members in the cab & standing along side the engine. This engine is working as coal exhaust is going out of the boiler stack, & steam escaping in 2 places near the cab roof. Note the tender is full of coal indicating this engine is ready to go. 020.51.106: 1-8x10 B&W photo of CPR steam engine # 592 being used as a helper engine to assist a passenger train over a steep section of track. Research by Val Croswell shows that this engine is a 4-6-0 type with the engineer in his cab & the conductor standing on the ground with 3 men, all beside the engine. The 2nd steam engine is visible as well as 1 baggage car but no #s to provide ID. The reverse explains; Eng 592 on train 2 at Revelstoke, 1914. Engr. WT McCullough, fireman H. Reid. A CPR hand stamp is also on reverse. 020.51.107: 1-8x10 B&W photo showing CPR passenger engine, 4-4-4 wheel type standing at an octagon wooden water tower. There is no man power in this photo of this engine with the name plate CHINOOK. This engine & tender are very clean & I suspect it is ready to depart. A CPR hand stamp in on reverse. 020.51.108: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a smaller steam wood burning engine labelled as K & S #3, standing at rest with a box car & van in tow. 1 man is sitting on the cow catcher but no other persons are shown. A CPR hand stamp is on reverse but no data. 020.51.109: 1-8x10 B&W photo of a CPR steam engine pushing 6 gondolas over the Kicking Horse river bridge, east of Field on the old right of way at Mount Field. A CPR hand stamp is on reverse as well as this info. 020.51.110: 1-8x10 B&W photo of CPR steam Engine # 404 at Lake Slocan wharf ca 1908, with 3 deck steam ship SLOCAN at the wharf also. This is a winter scene. 020.51.111: 1- 8x10 B&W photo of CPR steam engine # 561 at Field 1908. Engr L. Patrick, fireman WT McCulloch . This engine & tender are clean & shiny, showing the pride the engineer has of "his steed" & his apparel. Note his white shirt, suit jacket, bowler hat all protected with a clean white set of bib overalls & coat. This is a coal burning locomotive that is steamed up & ready to haul a passenger train of which we can see the 1st car is for baggage. 020.51.112: 1 8x10 B&W CPR photo of CPR Robot-1 car #C-4465 coupled to CPR SD-40 diesel engine #5563 in a large CPR yard, location unknown. Maybe some connection to Reynolds? 020.51.113: 1 8x10 B&W CPR photo of passenger engine #223 at North Bend, Alta. 1906. Note: This is an excellent photo with perfect lighting conditions to display all details of this engine & the cut stone engine house adjacent to it. This is a 4-6-0, coal fired steam engine with a Belpaire type firebox. Judging from the smoke from the engine stack, this locomotive is waiting to depart. 020.51.114: 1 8x10 B&W CPR photo of CPR steam engine #1600 at Field in 1904. Engine driver is F. Maunder. This 2-8-0 engine looks as though it is ready for service as the coal bunker is full. We see the operating crew standing by the engine in the yard. 020.51.115: 1 8x10 B&W photo of a town being built in the mountains. It is stamped as a CPR photo on reverse so I presume it is in the area of Field. There is a wagon road in the centre of the photo with a commercial 2 story building on the right & another 2 story building across the road. We can see several other buildings & people standing & sitting in the vicinity of these buildings. Note the fire barrels of water mounted on the roof tops, with ladders lain on the roof to access them. There are wooden sidewalks & picket fences indicating these buildings have been erected sometime before. The only data on reverse is the CPR stamp. 020.51.116: 1 8x10 B&W photo of many younger men, older clerks & staff in suits, standing outside beside a CPR box car for what appears to be an awards meeting "on the RR tracks" No data other than the CPR stamp on reverse. 020.51.117: 1 6x12 B&W photo of a steam engine hauling a passenger train in winter in a flat countryside. There is a reefer car behind the tender, then the coaches. Lovely plumes of steam are escaping the engine stack in a way that shows a high speed train here. No data. 020.51.118: A 8x10 B&W photo of a gathering of men only at a ceremony in front of a railway tunnel portal. Construction workers are standing behind a buttress at the left side of the tunnel, while 19 dignitaries in coats, suits & hats are listening to a speaker also in a suit & holding his fedora. There is a white table cloth on a table beside him with 1 bottle standing on it. Just inside the tunnel entrance are piled ties & wooden barrels. No data other than the CPR stamp. 020.51.119: 1 8x10 B&W photo of a CPR freight train showing 2 CPR diesel locomotives in "mid train" of a grain train in the west. There is a robot car behind the 2 engines which controls the 2 mid train engines in this winter scene. No data with this CPR photo. 020.51.120: 1 8x10 B&W photo of 2 men in suits. No data. 020.51.121: Same as #120, no data. 020.51.122: Same as #120, no data. 020.51.123: 1 8x10 B&W photo of 5 men in suits. 4 of them are shaking hands & smiling. No data. 020.51.124: 1 8x10 B&W photo of a large group of office personnel standing to honour 1 man standing in the centre, foreground. No data. 020.51.125: Duplicate of 124. 020.51.126: 1 8x10 B&W CPR photo of the construction of the Connaught tunnel. We see a large steam powered "steam shovel" loading rock & dumping the same into a gondola on the tracks. There is a string of these gondolas being hauled by a steam locomotive. 020.51.127: 1 8x10 B&W photo of CPR engineer Ed McAuliffe's last trip after 47 years service. There are approx 30 men & women & G/kids standing on the ground beside a CPR steam engine in the North Bay yards. 020.51.128: 1 8x10, B&W CPR photo of 3 men & 2 mules standing together in front of the Connaught tunnel construction site in 1816. 020.51.129: 1 8x12 B&W photo of St. Lawrence & Ottawa Railway steam locomotive "Thos Reynolds" at Kemptville, Ont in 1878. It is stopped at the station & is hauling at least 3 coaches. There are approx 8 persons standing on the station platform & 2 men & 1 women standing inside the 1st coach, 2 men on the tender & a man in the engineer's seat. 020.51.130: 1 8x10 B&W photo by the Lethbridge Herald showing a diesel locomotive engineer at the controls of engine 5201 inside the cab. He is in control of this engine in the yards, location unknown. 020.51.131: 1 8x10 B&W photo by CPR official photographer, Nicholas Morant of 2 staff members inside the diesel engine # 5557. 1 man is sitting in the engineer's seat holding a phone to his ear & the other man is standing beside him. 020.51.151: 4x6, B&W photo showing a steam engine coupled to a 2 Canadian Pacific flat cars.
