Description

"Host John Size on the set of 'Digest 10', the 6 p.m. news package. One the left is cameraman Clive Capey and on the right is cameraman Larry Brisson. Cameramen earned their money at CKGN-TV. They erected the sets, moved scenery, set up commercial displays in the studio, did all the lighting and operated the cameras. Because there were often no more than two cameramen in the studio, one of them would usually have to lock his camera on to one particular shot and then leave it, unattended, while he went and set up some other set or display at the far end of the studio. John Size had been a popular figure in the area before coming to TV. For years, on radio, he wrote and performed a Saturday radio serial entitled, 'Michael Mulligan of the Mounties'. John did all the voices....micheal Mulligan, Jacques Corbeau, his French-Canadian side-kick and Jack West, the Crazed old prospector. John was CKGN's weather man but is best remembered for hosting 'Northern Guidepost'. Being an avid boater and fisherman himself, ohn was a natural for this weekly outdoor show. This photo also shows the station's two cameras. The one on the right....labelled '2'....was a General Electric model and was the station's first and only camera from 1955 until 1959 when the second camera, the one on the left....an English Pye...was purchased. The electronic tube inside the camera which produced the picture, the Orthocon tube, was very expensive. So, to save money, CKGN purchased used tubes from the CBC in Toronto; usually these tubes would have 600 operating hours on them." - 021.72.22
